When you have curious children and an afternoon to burn, why not try our erupting apples guide! Fun for everyone! *PLEASE NOTE: THIS EXPERIMENT IS SUITABLE FOR 3-6 YRS. AN ADULT MUST BE PRESENT AND SUPERVISE CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES*

*Gloves must be worn throughout this experiment*

YOU WILL NEED:

STEP 1

Gather the materials.

STEP 2

In a bowl, add 1 cup Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, 1 tbsp liquid soap, and 1 tbsp WaterStart mixing together.

STEP 3

*OPTIONAL: If you would like to make a coloured apple, add a teaspoon of liquid water colour.*

Carry on mixing until it comes together and you can shape it into a ball.

*If the mixture is too crumbly, add a little bit of water at a time and bring it together. If it is too mushy, add more Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate to make it firmer.

STEP 4

When you’ve got a nice doughy consistency, scrape the mixture out of the bowl and roll it together into a ball. Complete by adding a leaf.

STEP 5

*Make sure this step is completed with everything in a tray as this will get messy. The tray will try and catch anything that overflows.*

To make the apple erupt, put a cup of Acetic Acid 6% into a Bottle with Oil Nozzle and place the apple into a bowl.  Make sure the bowl is in a try to prevent a big mess and catch anything that overflows. Now squirt your Bottle with Oil Nozzle containing Acetic Acid 6% onto the apple and watch it erupt!

THE METHOD BEHIND THE EXPERIMENT

What you see happening to the apple is a chemical reaction, and in a chemical reaction, the molecules change! Acetic Acid 6% reacts with Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and one product of that reaction is carbon dioxide gas. This is explains the fun fizzy bubbles that erupt from the apple!
